Speech and Language Development Wheel^™

a guide for parents, carers and practitioners primarily covering younger children 

2011 is the National Year for Speech and Communication and this wheel has been developed by early years specialists in Harrow and by NHS practitioners at North London Hospital Trust. It has been produced  to compliment our other birth to five wheel and focuses directly on the development of a young child's talking and reading skills . Like our other wheels, this easy to use full colour wheel twists around to reveal the section you need.

Split into nine sections, one side of the wheel focuses on what the child may be able to do - such as recognition, movement and noises from birth, through to the development of talking and reading skills as they get older. The front sections of the wheel concentrate on five colour-coded areas of development which are:

Attention and Listening       Social Interaction        Play        Understanding        Expression, Talking and Speech

The other side of the wheel looks at what you can do to help this development and is also accompanied by illustrative drawings. 
This wheel specialises on the development of speech and language in the early years, whilst our other more general birth to five wheel looks at the things that the child might/should be able to do at a certain age from birth onwards, as well as a list of things that the family can do to help the child, for each age group. The reverse side of the general wheel gives parents information about how to keep the child safe and healthy at each stage of their development from birth through to five years old. Like the general birth to five wheel, this simple to use one piece tool (they measure approx 230mm in diameter, so they are easy to carry around) comes laminated for a longer lifespan and all of the information contained within it was written by childcare practitioners to ensure that it will meet the needs of both parents and carers.
